The Rothdale family had already secured an heir for the throne, and Isla von Rothdale had no real interest in being a mother, so Baby Ellery's arrival was unexpected and unplanned. They were born prematurely on a stormy April afternoon, and throughout their early childhood, they were very sickly and frail, which all came to a head when they were five years old and fell ill to an infection which was almost fatal. After this, their parents got extremely overprotective over them. This frustrated El endlessly, especially when they got to watch their older brother Nate doing all sorts of interesting things.

However, as El grew, so did their strength - both physically and mentally. They were the kind of child to question everything around them; an insatiably inquisitive nature, never satisfied with surface-level answers. This curiosity didn't fade as they grew older - in fact, if anything, it grew stronger. They're still the kind of person to look for hidden meanings behind answers, never taking anything at face value. After all, with the amount of lies they've been told over the years, why would they blindly believe everything?

El has a strong sense of justice, which may have been a result of the way their brother was treated growing up. They would never hesitate to point out the double standards in their treatment growing up - "Why are you making HIM do that, when I want to do it, and he doesn't? You think I'm too weak? I'm not incapable!" - and it's that keen sense of 'wanting to do the right thing' that motivates many of their actions as an adult.

El strongly disagree with many of their father's policies, especially regarding funds and charity - they think that more money should be spent to help citizens in need, instead of simply filling the royal family's own purses - to the point that they're rarely invited to formal events any more, in case they 'make a scene'.
