AULBER
The world in which everything takes place.

COMMS DEVICE
A personal handheld communicator, much like a mobile phone. Powered by magic, most comms devices are controlled using gestures, although some older models still require manually touching the screen. Colloquially referred to as a 'comm'.

MAGE
Anybody with an innate ability to generate magical energy is referred to as a Mage. Being a Mage is complicated; magic is a highly regulated system, and children born with magic are often 'acquired' by the Royal courts, and trained from a young age to work for their realm. (The only exception to this is Upper Easlow.)
Understandably, a lot of people aren't fond of this system. Rebels have begun developing ways to block magical energy from being detected, meaning that unregulated Mages are slowly becoming more common than they used to be.
Being a Mage is a born trait. It's impossible to 'become' a Mage.

PRINTMARK
Magical tattoo. The craft of printmarking is extremely difficult to master. If you go to an illegal printmarker, you run the risk of the Mage losing control or focus, resulting in the image and colours spreading. You can always recognise a back-alley printmark by the tendrils of colour extending from it.

SLOWBEAN
A childish insult used when someone's being slow. Origin: bean plants are known for growing really slowly in Aulber.
